As the Asia Cup 2025 approaches, discussions surrounding Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Sanju Samson are intensifying. Despite his impressive performance in T20 cricket, uncertainty looms over his inclusion in the playing XI for the Asia Cup. The return of Shubman Gill, who has been appointed as vice-captain, complicates Samson's chances of securing a spot in the lineup.
Last year, following the T20 World Cup, Samson took on the responsibility of opening the batting and scored three centuries. In 12 matches, he amassed 417 runs against teams like Bangladesh, South Africa, and England, boasting an average of 37.90 and a strike rate of 183.70. However, his recent series against England was underwhelming, with his highest score being just 26 runs across five matches.
Shubman Gill's return poses a challenge for Samson, as it is likely that Gill will be given a chance at the top order, pushing Samson to the middle order. In this scenario, he will face stiff competition from Jitesh Sharma.
Meanwhile, former Indian coach Ravi Shastri has weighed in on the situation, asserting that moving Samson from the opening position would be a mistake. He emphasized that Samson is considered one of the most dangerous batsmen in the top order and should be allowed to play there.
Shastri further stated that if Gill is to be included, it should be at the expense of another player, but removing Samson from the opening slot would not be beneficial for the team. Despite a tumultuous IPL season marred by injuries, Samson has regained form in the Kerala Cricket League, where he delivered outstanding performances, including a century, ahead of the Asia Cup.
